The hybrid model: double-edged sword
The pitch is real: route routine audio to cheap ASR, escalate the critical files to humans, one integration. The catches developers hit:
- Model selection becomes your problem. Four-plus engines with different accuracy/language/price trade-offs mean benchmarking work before you can even forecast costs.
- Insight features stack on the base rate, AssemblyAI-style — the advertised per-hour number is the floor, not the bill.
- The human tier anchor distorts decisions. At 600x the Turbo price, occasional human escalation can dominate total spend; teams discover their "10% human" assumption was 60% of the budget.
